List of Visiting Faculty
- Dr. Jack Lemons
- Dr. Mark Davis
|
From Williamsburg Kentucky and a 1967 graduate of the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry,
Dr. Davis served in 1967-68 as an intern with the Florida Board of Health assigned to the Florida
Correctional Institute for women near Ocala. He has been in private practice in Clearwater since 1968.
Dr. Davis recognized in 1968 that Implant Dentistry had the potential to solve patient prosthetic problems
which conventional dental education and treatment did not satisfactorily address.
In 1970, after limited exposure to organized lectures on implant dentistry and two years of private study
he performed his first dental implant surgery. Since that time Dr. Davis has treated over 4000 patients
with implant dentistry providing both surgical and prosthetic care.
Dr. Mark V. Davis is a member of numerous professional organizations and has served in many leadership
positions beginning in 1973 as Chairman of the Ethics Committee of the Upper Pinellas Dental Association.
He organized and raised funds to support the first emergency patient care service in the community.
Dr. Davis was elected President of the Upper Pinellas Dental Association in 1976.
He is currently (2005-2007) President of the Alabama Implant Study Group(AISG). The AISG has an outstanding
history since 1974 of providing outstanding leadership, educational, scientific and technical contributions
to the field of implant dentistry.
In 1992 Dr. Davis served as guest editor of the first special edition of the Journal of the American Dental
Association, (JADA) dedicated to implant dentistry. This publication advanced the profession’s recognition
of the advantages which implant treatment could provide patients and moved implant education forward.
The American Board of Oral Implantology/Implant Dentistry (ABOI) established in 1988 by the American
Academy of Implant Dentistry (1951) is the examination and credentialing body that tests board eligible
dentists who perform implant surgery and/or implant prosthetics. Board candidates who pass this
psychometrically administered examination are recognized as Diplomates of the American Board of
Oral Implantology. The Diplomat Certificate represents the highest level of tested competency in the
disciplines of dental implant surgery/prosthetics.
Dr. Mark Davis was an examiner and board member from 1992-1999. In 2000 Dr. Davis served as President of
the American Board of Oral Implantology/Implant Dentistry.
Since 1981 Dr. Davis has presented over 500 clinical lectures to various local, state, national and
international meetings. He served in 1993 as guest faculty at Baylor College of Dentistry and the
University of Kentucky College of Dentistry from 1983-90.
He has been a member of the American Association since 1965 and an elected member of the American Academy
of Restorative Dentistry, the American Academy of Fixed Prosthodontics, the Society for the Preservation
of Oral Health and the Florida Academy of Dental Practice Administration. In addition Dr. Davis is an
Honored Fellow of the American Academy of Implant Dentistry and the Midwest Implant Institute and a
Diplomate of the American Board of Oral Implantology.
Dr. Davis founded and is President of Tatum Surgical, the source for Tatum Implants, Tatum Surgical
Instruments and other dental specialty products for implant and prosthetic dentistry.
Dr. Davis also established and is President of the Tatum Institute USA to provide advanced continuing
dental education based on the principles of patient care developed by Dr. Hilt Tatum.
Dr. Davis and his wife Karen, a dental hygienist, live in Clearwater Florida along with 2 border collies.
They have 3 children, Laura, Lea, Jennifer and 5 grandchildren. Friends in dentistry, family, gardening,
travel, and talking about next week’s imaginary exercise program are favorite activities.
Dr. Davis has spent his entire career in implant dentistry practicing and teaching that all treatment
decisions should be predicated on the simpliest form of treatment which will meet the need of the patient
and that every patient should be treated in the manner we would prefer should we be the patient. An implant
dentist should be ethical, gentle, kind of manner, and extremely competent.
